The rhythm and essence of flamenco dance is expressed through a powerful combination of handclaps arm and hand gestures fluid movements and intricate sequences of percussive footstamps.
In traditional flamenco are many forms of music and dance – each group has a distinctive compas (rhythmic structure) and association. Within each form are many variations.
It takes time to absorb the rhythms and master the techniques of this profoundly expressive art. For those drawn to explore the power and passion
of flamenco, the process can be deeply absorbing, enriching and empowering.
Flamenco has a rich cultural heritage, absorbing many influences over the centuries, including – Moorish, Indian, Egyptian, Latin American, Jewish and Andalusian. Today you will find many nationalities attending flamenco classes; such is the international appeal of flamenco.
Class Levels - a general guide only
This can vary depending on previous dance experience, fitness levels.
If unsure ask for an assessment.
LEVEL 1 – BEGINNERS –
Little or no previous dance experience.
LEVEL 2 –IMPROVERS -
For those with a basic skill level (at least one terms previous experience in flamenco).
LEVEL 3 – INTERMEDIATE
Minimum of one to two years experience and a good grounding in technique & a variety of compas.
LEVEL 4 – ADVANCED
For those with a good technical ability and minimum of 2 to 3 years experience.

Traditional Flamenco Technique & Choreography
ALL CLASSES INCLUDE - WARM - UP
Techniques and sequences to develop core strength, posture, stamina & breathe control
BEGINNERS Technique & Choreography
Empowering techniques to develop strength stamina and rhythmic skills. Introducing all the essential elements of authentic Flamenco at a comfortable pace - with a short choreography to get the rhythms flowing through your veins.
IMPROVERS Technique & Choreography
Designed to develop a strong foundation in technique and a range of compas (rhythmic structures) Each term introduces choreography to develop skills in a variety of traditional Flamenco dance forms.
INTERMEDIATE Technique & Choreography
For those who have experience in a variety of compas (rhythms).
This class develops strength speed, precision and the expressive core through technique and more intricate choreography.
ADVANCED Technique & Choreography
A dynamic class for those ready for the challenges of advanced techniques & choreography. Classes are encouraged to dig deeper into the expressive core, develop individual style and explore the subtleties of performance, the nature of Pellizcos and more.
FLAMENCO TECHNIQUE – General level
A useful supplement for anyone taking regular Flamenco classes. Empowering exercises to develop strength, speed, precision and broaden rhythmic and technical skill. Classes focus on different aspects of technique each week.
Strong technique informs creative expression
At least 2 terms in Flamenco dance are recommended before joining this class.
FLAMENCO SEVILLANAS - The spirited dance of FIESTAS
Enjoyed for it’s own sake or as an introduction to lighter side of Flamenco known as Festero, Sevillanas are a popular form of Flamenco dance where the lively rhythms are expressed throughout four verses, with flowing movements, handclaps and percussive foot stamps. An excellent workout for body, mind and spirit.

FLAMENCO SEVILLANAS -Improvers
For those who have mastered the basics of the four verses the wide range of music for Sevillanas offers versatility in performance style. Improvers class introduces contrasting variations and includes technique for castanuelas (castanets) – often used to accompany the dance.

What to wear
CLOTHING - Light comfortable clothing allowing freedom of movement
FOOTWEAR - Trying a few classes before investing in flamenco footwear is recommended. Strong hard-soled shoes or boots with a chunky heel (narrow heels / slingbacks & trainers not suitable).
